3 dead, 6 security personnel missing as landslide hits military camp in Sikkim (X )
A devastating landslide struck an Indian Army camp in North Sikkim, claiming the lives of three personnel and leaving six others missing. The incident occurred early Monday morning following heavy rainfall in the region. Rescue operations are underway amid challenging weather and terrain conditions. Officials confirmed that the area remains unstable, and efforts are being made to locate the missing soldiers as swiftly as possible.
In a devastating turn of events, a landslide struck a military camp in Chhaten, North Sikkim, on Sunday evening, claiming the lives of at least three individuals. According to a statement released by a defence official on Monday, six security personnel remain missing, and rescue operations are currently underway.
The landslide was reportedly triggered by intense and continuous rainfall in the region. It occurred around 7 PM on Sunday, catching personnel at the remote military camp off guard. The combination of unstable terrain and severe weather has made the rescue efforts particularly difficult.
Despite treacherous conditions, rescue teams have been working tirelessly to locate the missing personnel. "Three bodies have been recovered so far, and four individuals were rescued with minor injuries," the defence official confirmed. The teams are braving poor visibility, slushy ground, and ongoing rain to carry out their mission.
Authorities have ramped up manpower and equipment in the affected zone. Specialized units trained in mountain and landslide rescue are on the scene. The ongoing weather conditions, however, continue to pose a serious threat to both the missing and the rescuers.
Sikkim, located in the eastern Himalayas, is especially prone to landslides during the monsoon season. The steep terrain, combined with deforestation and extreme rainfall, makes the region vulnerable to natural disasters. Military and civilian infrastructure often lie in high-risk zones, putting lives in danger during such calamities.
As rescue efforts stretch into a second day, families and fellow personnel wait in anxiety for news. The incident has once again highlighted the harsh and unpredictable nature of military postings in high-altitude regions like North Sikkim.
